I had a list: The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Legend, The Neverending Story, The Last Unicorn, The Princess Bride, Willow, and Wizards. (Can you tell I had an issue with reality from a young age?)

Yes, I still watch them all. Yes, I still love them all. I will never love other films quite like I love those.

I think I know why I loved them so much. In almost every story, normal people change the world. Become heroes. Most of the time, there is nothing particularly special about these heroes, they just happened to be there when help was needed, and did what they had to.

I guess 70's and 80's fantasy movies can be blamed for me becoming activist-minded. The first time I heard "If not me, then who? If not now, then when?" I understood what that meant, in a larger and more personal senseT

Since I'm not big on coincidence, I figured I'd go ahead and actually do one of these fucking things.

I think that honesty is the most important quality. I don't just mean honesty in the "If you ever lie to me I'll feed your nubbly bits to my cat" way, although that way is important. I also mean honesty with oneself. If I expect to be a good partner, I have to be honest with myself about what I need, what I can do, how I feel, and what ,my limits are before I can clearly communicate those things to my spouse. If I can't tell her the truth about any of those things because I don't know what the truth is (or won't acknowledge it) then we hit a permanent impasse.

In connection with this, forethought is really important. Learning to engage one's brain before opening one's mouth *mentally kicks self*
