The Department of Defense has identified 1,217 American service members who have died since the start of the Iraq war. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans yesterday:

HANKS, Michael W., 22, Lance Cpl., Marines; Gregory, Mich.; First Marine Division.

GAVRIEL, Dimitrios, 29, Lance Cpl., Marines; New York; Second Marine Division.

WEST, Phillip G., 19, Lance Cpl., Marines; American Canyon, Calif.; First Marine Division.
